Miss Snowflake (“our family elf”)

So I figured it was about time that I made a few posts about our holiday addition to our family….Miss Snowflake. Snowflake arrived on the day after Thanksgiving last year, 2013. My girls had watched the “Elf on the Shelf” movie a couple days prior, in which my oldest daughter, then 5 years old stated that she didn’t believe in “elf” and that there is no way our family would ever get one. Low and behold, a few days later there was a knock on the door. Kahlen went to answer the door, at which time she found a package on her doorstep. I wish I would have had a video of when she realized that our family had gotten an elf. I believe it went something like “Mom mom look at what was on the doorstep!! It really is real! I can’t believe it’s really real!” It was amazing to see her eyes light up with excitement. I wish I could go back to that age when I believed in the magic of Christmas and Santa…those were the good days.

We read the book that comes with “elf” and it says that we have to name “our elf”. It didn’t take more than two seconds for “Snowflake” to come out of my daughter’s mouth. I sometimes wonder if she had a name picked out beforehand, “just in case” an elf would would show up at our house.

So from that day on, Snowflake would return to the North Pole every night to report to Santa on the days’ events and on how well behaved the girls were. She’d come back the next day in a different spot, sometimes doing fun and amusing things. Other times (especially when mom was tired lol) she would just find herself in a different location in the house. Β Another important note, Kahlen (Ashlee was too young at the time to really understand) had to make sure she did not touch Snowflake, for if she did, Snowflake would lose her magic…

Here are some pictures from 2013 of the things Snowflake got herself into….

NIGHT 1: My husband was in charge of the first night because I had to work a NOC shift. My daughter appreciated this one.

NIGHT 2: The girls stayed at my mother in law’s house for a night. Of course Snowflake still visited, but this time she was sad because the girls weren’t there. πŸ˜‰

NIGHT 3: Snowflake was a little naughty and found the toilet paper. When Kahlen woke up that next morning and saw the tree, she cried. “Why did she ruin the tree mom? I just don’t understand why she would do that.” Mommy fail #1 haha. Apparently I didn’t realize that she’s not quite old enough to understand some of Snowflake’s antics. πŸ™‚

NIGHT 4: Snowflake found the stockings……….and Kahlen’s underwear drawer. I personally liked this one and found it quite amusing. My daughter didn’t really understand it. (She understands a little more this year that Snowflake can be quite sneaky when she wants to be)

NIGHT 5: Just fish in with pops

NIGHT 6: Sweet dreams Snowflake… (She’s slipping in a Kleenex box with a Kleenex pillow and blanket. So by this night my daughter understood very well that she couldn’t “touch” her or her magic would go away. I came downstairs and realized that Snowflake had magically moved. I drilled Kahlen, asking where she was, telling her that if she touched her she wasn’t going to come back for two nights, yadda yadda. Well my daughter, as smart as she is, looks at me and smiles. “Mom, I didn’t TOUCH Snowflake.” “Well Kahlen how did she get from the kitchen to the dining room.” I asked “Mom, I didn’t touch Snowflake. I touched the Kleenexes. As she lets out this evil little giggle.” Little smartypants πŸ™‚

NIGHT 9: After a two day hiatus (I think she was cheering on the Packers haha), Snowflake is back, relaxing in a nice marshmallow bubble bath to warm up after the trip to the North Pole.

NIGHT 10: Snowflake somehow managed to trap herself between the jungle and the dinosaur age.

NIGHT 11: Snowflake found a boyfriend.

NIGHT 12: Just playing with some Polly Pockets..

NIGHT 13: It’s a low-key kind of night after all the adventures she had been having lately!

NIGHT 14: Snowflake wanted to be a part of the family pictures!

NIGHT 15: Looks like someone got into the sprinkles πŸ˜‰ This was by far one of my favorite ones. I think this one was Kahlen’s favorites as well.

NIGHT 16: Just another zip-lining adventure (This was my husband’s favorite.)

NIGHT 18: Look who got into the candy bag…

NIGHT 19: Making some s’mores with the prince. Yum Yum. (I used a candle as the “fire” and candles as the “sticks”)

NIGHT 20: Snowflake had a litttttle too much fun with the wrapping paper. This one took me FOREVER to do. The pictures don’t do it justice considering how much wrapping paper and time it took! Jeff looked at me like I was a little crazy needless to say.

NIGHT 21: This was probably one of my favorites. We had a huge Winter Storm Warning out, got around 8 inches of snow. So Snowflake took advantage of all that “snow” (cotton balls) and went sledding on our stair railing!

NIGHT 22: Snowflake might have gotten in a little trouble for this one… (My daughter was not amused haha. I, however, thought it was hilarious) I didn’t draw on the picture just used a dry-erase marker on the glass part of the frame.

NIGHT 23: Snowflake was found in the fridge just eating some breakfast. And breakfast wouldn’t be complete without a little syrup to wash it down!

LAST NIGHT: Snowflake has left. In her place she wrapped up this and left it on the tree for her two favorite little girls. Until next year… Kahlen had kept telling me that she wished Snowflake didn’t have to go and wished she’d just stay or have something to remind her of. So, Snowflake wrote this letter and took some “selfies” with the girls while they were sleeping. I can’t even describe how Kahlen’s eyes lit up when she realized she had pictures of her and Snowflake. It was amazing.

I wasn’t for sure if Kahlen would understand or even remember Snowflake after the hype of Christmas and presents went away. I shouldn’t have underestimated her though. Through the course of the past year, she has mentioned Snowflake more than 20 times. Sometimes completely randomly in the car mentioning how much she “misses Snowflake” and “wishes she would come back and visit” She asked if she would visit on her birthday and every other major holiday there was. Needless to say, when Thanksgiving rolled around this year she was more than ready for her best little “elf” to come back.

On a side note, I definitely underestimated the amount of TIME and work and planning it took to figure out different things to do with Snowflake. I think I might have had more fun with her than Kahlen did! LOL. Even I started to believe again. πŸ™‚

Hopefully I can get another post started soon about what Snowflake has gotten herself into for 2014 πŸ™‚

I was born and raised in the boondocks...quite literally. Small town where everyone knows everything about you! This blog is starting out as blogging about my "stitch fixes" but hopefully it will turn into a blog about life, love, faith, and hope.
